The Big Tobacco lobby owns our representatives

With great fanfare and flatulence, Speaker of the U.S. House John Boehner announced that the newly elected Republican majority would be the “people’s house.” This from the man who you can watch on video admitting that he passed out campaign contributions from the tobacco lobby on the floor of the House in 2009.

Maybe the U.S. House has suddenly become the “people’s house,” but the Republican majority in North Dakota apparently hasn’t heard the message yet.

Rep. Rae Ann Kelsch, R-Mandan, was apparently huffed up and suspicious at a recent committee meeting regarding House Bill 1353. This bill would eliminate the tobacco prevention program’s 10 percent share of the tobacco settlement payments to instead fund an expansion of the University of North Dakota medical school. The fact that many citizens attending were all wearing red and in support of continuing tobacco cessation efforts seemed to spell a conspiracy to her.

It would certainly be a travesty if common citizens banded together to support something that passed overwhelmingly on initiated measure just two years ago.

It’s a tough time for tobacco lobbyists and spouses! I wonder if Kelsch has seen any of the news out of Egypt lately?
