SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – South Dakota voters on Election Day get the final say on a 2009 law that expands the state’s indoor smoking ban to bars, video lottery establishments and Deadwood casinos.
Lawmakers voted to extend the state’s current ban on smoking in most workplaces and public areas, but a coalition of bars and gambling businesses gathered enough signatures to put the law to a Nov. 2 statewide vote.

HELSINKI — Finland has banned selling or giving cigarettes to people under the age of 18 as part of extensive legislation that aims to make the Nordic country smoke-free by 2040.
The new law says that anyone caught providing youth with tobacco products faces fines and a maximum six-month sentence. It came into force on Friday.
The legislation also allows housing associations to ban smoking near children’s play areas and o ... Jump to full article >>

In a landmark move, the Kansas House passed a statewide public smoking ban Thursday and sent it to Gov. Mark Parkinson.
If Parkinson signs the legislation as expected, Kansas will join nearly 40 states that have some statewide restrictions on where smokers can light up.
The ban would go into effect July 1.
Today’s vote was 68-54. Supporters said they were tired of waiting as ban proposals languished for years on the legisla ... Jump to full article >>

That’s the response from some Plymouth bar and restaurant managers to Michigan’s new workplace smoking law, which will ban smoking inside their establishments come next May.
The long-debated bill was signed into law Friday by Gov. Jennifer Granholm. It prohibits smoking at most indoor workplaces, with exceptions for truck cabs, cigar bars and tobacco shops, as well as the gaming floors of Detroit’s three casinos ...
