A BOSTON jury last week ordered Lorillard, the tobacco company, to pay $71 million as compensation — and another $81 million in punitive damages — for the death of lifelong smoker Marie Evans, who died of lung cancer in 2002. Evans’s son William, a Harvard-trained lawyer, claimed that Lorillard had hooked his mother on cigarettes by giving out free samples of Newports in the Boston neighborhood where she lived as a child in ... Mayor Bloomberg’s administration is suing a tobacco company in Washington state, saying it illegally sells and distributes untaxed cigarettes in New York.
The suit was filed Tuesday in federal court in Brooklyn.
It alleges that King Mountain Tobacco Company made numerous shipments of unstamped cigarettes to New York state, a violation of three federal statutes.
King Mountain is Indian-owned and is located on the Yakama reserva ... Jump to full article >>

The problem is how to manage 3,800 tobacco cases when each one will take a year to get to trial and another two to three weeks to try.
By one Jacksonville lawyer’s estimate, the process will take 760 years.
