The Health Bureau (SS) has plans to raise the tobacco tax prior to the anti-smoking law becoming effective on January 1, 2012.
SS director Lei Chin Ion told reporters yesterday the bureau has proposed a rise in the tax to the Economic Services Bureau and is now working on several administrative regulations to accompany the anti-smoking law, according to TDM news.

LINCOLN, Neb. — A bill that would create a way for Nebraska to collect tobacco tax revenue from Native American tribes advanced Wednesday through a first-round legislative vote.
The measure would call for state officials to reach compacts with tribes so they could collect money to comply with a national legal settlement with the four largest U.S. tobacco companies.
At stake is $46 million in settlement money for health care ... Jump to full article >>

Legislators are trying once again to curb cigarette smuggling, both into and out of North Carolina, by re-establishing a stamp on cigarette packs. This year, the odds look better than in the past, and that is good.
North Carolina has long had one of the lowest state cigarette taxes. Because of that, organized crime and terrorist organizations have bought cigarettes here and resold them illegally in high-tax states. Call it a duel between tobacco tax studies.
During a floor debate in the Legislature last month on lowering the New Hampshire tobacco tax, Rep. Patrick Abrami, R-Stratham, said the move was necessary to help small businesses rebound and strengthen a competitive advantage in lower cigarette taxes with neighbor states.
“We have reached the tipping point,” Abrami said about the sizeable increase in tobacco taxes that had ... Jump to full article >>

Fighting tobacco in the political arena has proven to be a tough battle for those countries attempting it. As cigarettes and tobacco products are not actually illegal, governments that have wished to reduce smoking through regulation have been forced to seek alternative measures, such as heavy taxes and requiring tobacco companies to label their products with warnings of the addictive properties and dangerous health effects of ... Democrats want a tax hike from 57 cents per pack now to help reduce smoking – and raise money to fund programs being cut, including public schools and Medicaid.
