Smokefree North West has recently seen a surge in tobacco barons in Russia and China who are helping recruit a new generation of smokers through cheap illicit imports and hand rolled tobacco.

While cross-border smuggling in the Cuu Long (Mekong) Delta’s border areas has decreased somewhat, no headway has been made against the trafficking of cigarette, local authorities concede.

Federation of Sundry Goods Merchants’ Association president Lean Hing Chuan said the association received a letter from a tobacco company on Saturday informing the association of the price increase effective today.

CUSTOMS officers and gardai seized a shipment of smuggled cigarettes worth almost €4m after placing surveillance on a lorry.
Operation Cleo resulted in the recovery of 10.59m contraband cigarettes, with a street value of €3.78m and a potential loss to the exchequer of €3.38m.

Customs officers have seized more than eight million cigarettes in an anti-smuggling operation at Dublin Port, it emerged tonight.
The cigarettes were discovered in a container which arrived from China last Friday, which was kept under surveillance until it was moved the following day.
The container was stopped as it was travelled northbound on the M1, near Swords, and brought back to the port.
