CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) – Since the start of 2011, Alcohol Law Enforcement agents have handed out more than 100 citations statewide to clerks selling tobacco products to underage kids.
ALE agents say seven of the violations happened at Charlotte gas stations and convenience stores, many of them along Park Road in south Charlotte.
The clerks who sold the tobacco products could face a $1,000 fine and possibly 30 days community service.

A meaningful ruling came out yesterday in a lawsuit filed by a group of smokers against Korea Tomorrow & Global (formerly Korea Tobacco & Ginseng), which manufactures and sells tobacco products. The Seoul High Court ruled that there was considerable correlation between smoking and lung cancer. It added that the plaintiffs had been smoking for a long period of time and suffered lung cancer, acknowledging the epidemiological relevance.

The Snohomish County Health District is ramping up efforts to cut down on teen smoking. So this week, it’s seeking out stores that are selling tobacco products to minors.
The process is more like fishing. Health officials send a 17-year-old into a store to ask for cigarettes or chewing tobacco. About 1 in 10 stores make the sale.

I lost my dear dad to lung cancer due to cigarettes. He became addicted at age 12. It breaks my heart to know that in 2010, there are stores in my city that are making cigarettes and other tobacco products readily available for youth.
