R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. should be punished with paying an award of at least $10 billion to a man who developed cancer and emphysema from smoking, his lawyer, Willie Gary, said in an opening statement at a Florida trial.

Winston-Salem, NC &#8212; Reynolds American is reducing its workforce in the city by asking 1,400 manufacturing employees to take a severance package.
Reynolds American is the parent company of R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. and announced the severance offer on Wednesday.
Spokeswoman Maura Payne said the employees have until Jan. 31 to take the offer. In 2009, about 400 employees took a severance package offered by the company.

Gov. Chris Gregoire called out the R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. on Monday, saying a special-edition line of  Camel cigarettes marketed with Seattle imagery is &#8220;a one-way ticket to disease and addiction.&#8221;

A woman is suing some of the nation’s largest tobacco companies in Manatee County Circuit Court for monetary damages after she developed chronic obstructive pulmonary disease after smoking, according to a lawsuit filed this month.
Rebecca A. Ireland is suing several tobacco companies, including Philip Morris USA and R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co.

R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. has launched another edgy marketing campaign for Camel cigarettes, this time having the iconic mascot visiting nine trendy U.S. destinations before coming home to Winston-Salem.
Predictably, the campaign has drawn the ire of the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids, which tends to accuse Reynolds of trying to appeal to youth in its advertising, and health officials in at least one of the cities.

HARRISBURG, PA. — A Pennsylvania appellate court is siding with R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. in a lawsuit over advertising that the company ran in Rolling Stone magazine in 2007.
The state Commonwealth Court&#8217;s Tuesday decision overturned a Philadelphia judge who ordered Reynolds to pay a $302,000 fine or pay for an anti-smoking ad in a Pennsylvania edition of the magazine.
