Council OKs youth tobacco rule

Teenagers who use tobacco in Bellefonte could be facing a hefty fine the next time they light up. Borough Council unanimously voted Monday night to approve an ordinance that makes it illegal for anyone younger than 18 to use or possess tobacco, in any form, within the borough limits. 63 business breached smoking ban

Sixty-three Reading businesses failed to stub out nicotine since the smoking ban was introduced. But despite this – and even though more than 1,000 premises in Reading borough have been inspected since July 2007 – no business or individual has been charged or fined for breaching anti-smoking laws. County receives one complaint in wake of smoking ban

The state has registered 171 complaints since the smoking ban in restaurants and bars went into effect Jan. 2. One of those complaints was at a Burlington bar. The complaint was made Monday against Cuz’s Tavern, at 1532 N. Graham-Hopedale Road, when a patron saw ashtrays on tables inside the bar, said Alamance County Health Department spokesman Eric Nickens. Repeat business offenders can be penalized $200 per day.
