Florham Park is considering an ordinance that would virtually ban smoking in all public places.
This proposed ban is unnecessary and bad for our economy.
I am a small business owner and a Certified Public Accountant. I have practiced my profession for 37 years. I am a former cigarette smoker who quit in 1993 but I still enjoy a fine cigar after my entree and before coffee and dessert. Anti-tobacco forces were in town last week to kick off the campaign to ban smoking in bars, video lottery establishments and Deadwood casinos.
Whether you favor that measure or not, most adults would agree that teenagers shouldn’t smoke.
Sad to say they smoke in greater numbers than adults.
When the South Dakota Tobacco-Free Kids Network was formed a decade ago, a whopping 44 percent of the state’s high school student ... Jump to full article >>

Banning smoking at state beaches and parks is a win for the public and for the environment.
There are times when a day at the beach feels more like a frolic in an ashtray, with cigarette butts liberally strewn through the sand and between our toes. On beach cleanup days in California, they are the No. 1 trash item that the volunteers pick up — 340,221 in a single day in 2009. That alone was a good enough reason for the Asse ... Jump to full article >>

It will be left to Missouri City voters to decide if the city bans smoking in public facilities, offers a homestead exemption and consolidates residents under a city-wide garbage collection contract.
The three issues will be carried as propositions on the ballot in the upcoming May city election.
Missouri City Councilman Jerry Wyatt suggested the items be placed on the election ballot as propositions.

Smoking with young children in the car can be dangerous to their health, and in Arkansas it’s also against the law.
The law was passed in 2008, one reason why some smokers 40/29 talked with had no idea it even exists.
Fayetteville resident R.L. Jackson said, “I’ve never heard of the law before.”
Jackson has been a smoker for a long time, and was raised in a smoking environment himself.

A tough new anti-smoking law was unveiled on Thursday, imposing heavy fines and imprisonment for those who flout its provisions. Under the law, smoking is banned in public places and on public transport, in vehicles where children under 12 are present, and in educational and health facilities and places of worship.
The introduction of the new law meets the UAE’s requirements as a member of the World Health Organisation and ... Jump to full article >>

Backers of the Tax and Regulate Initiative plan to submit their petitions to the secretary of state this month, the San Francisco Chronicle reported. They say they have more than 630,000 signatures, far more than the number needed to get the initiative on the ballot.
