A driver of a lorry transporting the contraband cigarettes was detained while another managed to escape during the separate raids at about 9pm on Tuesday in Menggatal.
Acting city police chief Supt Ramli Ali Amat told reporters at a news conference here yesterday that during the first raid, a team of MOF personnel spotted a three-tone lorry which they suspected were transporting smuggled cigarettes.
“They then stopped the lorry and found 104,000 packets of LA Menthol cigarettes without tax clearance,” said Ramli, adding that the 51-year-old driver was detained on the spot.
Some half an hour later, another team of MOF personnel stopped another three-tone lorry and confiscated 24,000 packets of BRO Mild Menthol and 48,000 LA Menthol cigarettes.
“However, the driver escaped when the MOF team approached the vehicle,” Ramli said.
The two cases are being probed under Section 135 (1) (e) of the Customs Act 1967.
Ramli, meanwhile commended the public for tipping off the MOF oh smuggling activities and he hoped they would continue to cooperate with the police to combat crime in the city.
