Cigarettes worth $11,600 seized in Sandy Point raid
A 67-year-old Sandy Point man is facing charges after RCMP from the Shelburne County Street Crime Enforcement Unit seized more than $11,600 worth of contraband cigarettes in searches of a house and vehicle.
More than 5,000 illegal cigarettes were found in the search of the house and a quantity of cash police believe was derived from the sales of the smokes was seized.
RCMP say the man was arrested driving through Shelburne and more than 5,000 contraband cigarettes were also seized from the vehicle. Although, it was noted that the vehicle could have been seized in accordance with the Excise Act, police released it back to the owner the next day.

Cigarettes and cash were seized in the raid.
The man will appear in court at a later date. A charge of possessing tobacco not stamped in accordance to the Excise Act is pending. RCMP say the minimum fine if convicted is $2030.
Cpl. Nancy Mason, of the Street Crime Enforcement Unit, said, “the possession of contraband tobacco on a local level continues to support the larger scale organized crime originating elsewhere in Canada.”
