Cigarette company raided for excise duty evasion

VARANASI: Unaccounted raw material and undeclared godowns, apart from huge stock of cigarettes worth crores, were unearthed by sleuths of Directorate General of Central Excise Intelligence, New Delhi, reportedly, at a manufacturing unit of a cigarette company in Shivpur locality, here on Monday.

The DGCEI sleuths simultaneously raided the manufacturing units, offices and other establishments of this company in 10 cities across the country.

The DGCEI sleuths raided the cigarette manufacturing unit of Rudra Enterprises in Shivpur under the leadership of deputy director, Sanjay Lavania. The officials from Delhi and Kanpur units of DGCEI, including senior investigation officers, Madhukar Anand and U K Shukla, and investigation officer, Pankaj Awasthi, worked hard for hours to ascertain the unaccounted stock, raw material and undeclared godowns of this company.

According to Anand, “this company is engaged in selling cheap cigarettes in the market”. Despite the fact that Rs 10 is charged as excise duty on per packet of cigarette, he alleged, this company is selling a packet of cigarette in the market against the payment of Rs 4-Rs 5 only. He alleged that it was a clear case of excise duty evasion.

The cost of seized raw material and undeclared stock was stated to be in crores of rupees. This company has its manufacturing units in Varanasi and Koshi Mathura. Apart from these places, the offices of the company, its stockist and dealers in 10 other cities, including New Delhi, Kanpur, Lucknow, Chennai, Madurai and Coimbatore, were also simultaneously raided by the DGCEI.
