Call for more action to cut smoking

Poor people in Scotland continue to smoke more and die younger, anti-smoking campaigners have said.

Action on Smoking and Health (ASH) Scotland is calling on all political parties to put tackling tobacco addiction at the heart of their manifestos ahead of next year’s Holyrood elections, amid fresh evidence that shows the gap between rich and poor is widening.

Some 43% of adults in deprived areas smoke, compared with 9% in the least deprived areas. Nearly a third of deaths in Scotland’s most deprived areas are due to smoking, compared to 15% in the most affluent.
