April 20 mention for RM900,000 fag smuggling case

JITRA: A magistrate’s court here fixed April 20 to mention the case of two Thais charged with smuggling RM900,000 worth of cigarettes into this country.

Magistrate Ahzal Fariz Ahmad Khairuddin said this was to allow the defence to obtain documents related to the case from the prosecution.

Ma-Ae Itae, 32, from Bangkok, and Wisut Mekarun, 51, from Sadao, were separately charged with smuggling several types of contraband cigarettes in 1,010 master cases.

Both claimed trial to committing the offence on Dec 24 last year at 2.10pm at KM1.6 of the North-South Expressway under Section 135(a)(e) of the Customs Act.

They each face a fine of up to 20 times the duty for the cigarettes or three years’ jail, or both.

Customs Department officer S. Morgan prosecuted while counsel S.M. Victor represented the two Thais.
